Under the jurisdiction of Mizo Hills
District's Deputy Commissioner, the Assam government
created 'DC Transport' on 1st March, 1967 to deal with the
transportation of foodstuffs. This DC Transport was set up with
a fleet strength of 10 Fargo Dodge (Perkin engine) vehicles.
When Mizoram attained Union Territory status in the year 1972,
the DC Transport was upgraded and became Supplies & Transport
Department under the Mizoram government. This department
was bifurcated into two Departments after 15 years of its
existence and the present Transport Department came to exist on
4th June, 1987 with a fleet of 100 buses. |

In
spite of the important role it plays, it has not been possible to meet the
growing demand for passenger movement mainly for want of funds for
acquisition of buses and development of infrastructure. In an economy with
68 per cent of the total population inhabiting rural areas, their transport
requirements must be met adequately and efficiently. This will enable
integration of thousands of rural people in the state economic main stream to a
large if not to a full extent. |
